
Hanks his next film role was that of astronaut and commanding officer Jim Lovell in the 1995 docudrama Apollo 13. This reunited him again with Ron Howard. The film was widely lauded by critics as well as the performance of the whole group (which comprised Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) as well as Kathleen Quinlan. The film earned nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks later played Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animated film Toy Story (1995). His directorial debut came a year later with The Thing You Do! (1996) which follows the rise and decline of a popular 1960s group and also a role of a music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine described his performance as "charming", and most people who reviewed it agreed that Hanks performance earned his place in the most popular romantic comedy stars of his generation.
